Prof. Dr. Chayanon Peerapittayamongkol, M.D., Ph.D.<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: royalblue;\">Translational Research from Genome to Organelle<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThe laboratory of Asst. Prof. Dr. Chayanon Peerapittayamongkol pursues a translational program at the interface of medical biochemistry, molecular genetics, and cellular pharmacology. Drawing on training in clinical genetics at Kobe University and a postdoctoral fellowship at INSERM\u2013Institut Pasteur, the group has moved from population-scale genetic association mapping to functional epigenetics and organelle-specific cell biology \u2014 with two primary clinical targets in view.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Pillar 1 \u2014 Reactivating fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in \u03b2-thalassemia\/HbE.<\/strong><\/u> In Southeast Asia&#8217;s most common severe inherited anemia, the laboratory uses primary erythroid progenitors from patients and healthy donors to dissect genetic modifiers of disease severity and to test new strategies for HbF induction. Recent work shows that lentiviral shRNA knockdown of HBS1L \u2014 a ribosome release factor partnering with PELO \u2014 stabilizes ATF4 transcripts through the integrated stress response and selectively up-regulates \u03b3-globin and mature HbF without disturbing terminal erythroid differentiation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Pillar 2 \u2014 Rescuing mitochondrial dynamics in Leber&#8217;s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON)<\/u><\/strong>.
