Stem cell เป็นเซลล์ที่มีคุณสมบัติในการเจริญเติบโต และมีการ differentiate ไปเป็นเซลล์อื่นๆได้เมื่อมีสภาวะที่เหมาะสม จำแนกออกได้เป็น adult และ embryonic stem cells เนื่องจาก adult stem cell เป็นเซลล์ที่มีจำนวนน้อย และต้องแยกออกมาจากร่างกายของสิ่งมีชีวิต ปัจจุบันนี้จึงนิยมสร้าง embryonic stem cell แทน เนื่องจากการสร้าง embryonic stem cell ของคน ยังมีปัญหาเรื่องจริยธรรม การสร้าง embryonic stem cell โดยใช้สัตว์ทดลอง จึงมีความเจริญก้าวหน้าไปอย่างมาก ในการสร้าง embryonic stem cell นั้น จะกระทำได้โดย แยก inner cell mass ของเซลล์ตัวอ่อน แล้วนำไปเลี้ยงในอาหารเลี้ยงเชื้อที่มี fibroblast เป็น feeder cell หลังจากที่ได้ stem cell แล้ว ก็จะใช้เป็นต้นแบบในการศึกษาการแสดงออกของยีน และยังใช้เป็นต้นแบบในการสร้าง human embryonic stem cell ต่อไปในอนาคต
