class=\"text\">\n\t\t\n<p>Erythropoiesis, a continuous physiological process by which mature red blood cells (RBC) are generated from multipotent stem cells, is regulated by myriad of cytokines, growth factors and extra-cellular matrix proteins via intracellular signal transduction pathways. Over the past two decades understanding of factors that regulate this process has increased, which has allowed for the development of in vitro culture systems that can on a small scale, generate RBCs from isolated stem cell populations. However, at present extrapolated cell numbers produced fall short of the level required for therapeutics, due to limited proliferation capacity. My research focuses on the identification of molecular mechanisms underlying the proliferation of erythroid cells with an aim of increasing the number of red blood cells obtained from in vitro culture system to enable development of a novel therapeutic product, as an alternative to donor blood. I am also interested to work on the generation of immortalised erythroid cell lines, and plan to use them as model cellular systems to study the molecular mechanisms of red cell disorders, eg. thalassemia.
