microRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small regulatory RNAs (~19-22nt) found in a wide range of organisms, including humans. They function as part of the post-transcriptional regulation of genes through binding with imperfect complementary sites in the 3′ UTRs of their target mRNAs and generally downregulating them. My research interest is in identifying the functions of specific miRNAs in different processes with the overall goal that these small RNAs may act to modulate some specific phenotypes or serve as biomarkers in diseases.
I have worked on the roles of miRNAs in sensitizing cells to or protecting cells from gamma radiation, utilizing the nematode, C. elegans, and breast cancer cell lines as models.
