Our interests are focused on the molecular biology of bacteriophages and their applications ranging from bacteriophage-based rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases, and exploiting bacteriophages and phage-derived products as an alternative to treating antibiotic resistant bacterial infections.
Highlight of Our Research Accomplishments
International Network
We are collaborating in phage studies with the pioneers of bacteriophage research such as Dr.Elizabeth Kutter, Evergreen State College, Olympia, USA; Prof.Martha RJ. Clokie, Leicester University, UK, Dr.Matthew Dunne, ETH, Switzerland.
In addition, we also have international collaborations with leading groups on Burkholderia pseudomallei research e.g. Prof.Mark P. Stevens, and Prof.Brendan Wren from UK.
Future Direction
Our research group has identified large sets of phages that effectively target Salmonella, Burkholderia, and are currently developing them as diagnostics and therapeutics agents.
In recent years, we have become increasingly interested in the genetics of phages that infect human pathogens. These genomes may provide the key to treatment of diseases caused by multi-drug-resistant bacteria e.g. Acinetobacter baumannii or treatment of biofilm formation generated from pathogenic bacteria.
