Early Origins (1888–1896)
1888
After King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) ordered the construction of a hospital at Wang Lang, later named "Siriraj Hospital" in honor of Prince Siriraj Kakudhabhand, it began serving patients on April 26, 1888.
1896
Queen Saovabha Phongsri, concerned about the lack of qualified midwives and the dangers of childbirth in Thailand, donated her private funds to establish training for midwives. The "School for Midwifery and Nursing" was subsequently established at Siriraj Hospital under the Department of Education, Ministry of Public Instruction. It opened on January 12, 1896, with Than Phu Ying Plien Pasakornrawong as Director and Dr. H. Adamson as instructor.
Development of Nursing Education (1906–1935)
1917
Male Nursing Training: Male nursing training was initiated in 1906 with a one-year curriculum but produced only one class before being discontinued. A revised two-year curriculum was introduced in 1914 but was also discontinued due to lack of popularity.
Queen Savang Vadhana provided scholarships for Miss Sangwan Talapat and Miss Ubon Palakavong Na Ayudhya to study nursing in the United States. During this time, the school underwent name changes and affiliations, including a student exchange program with the Thai Red Cross, which lasted until 1922.
1925 – 1935
Modern nursing was significantly developed under the guidance of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej (Prince of Songkla) with the assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation. The team included Miss Mildred Porter, Miss Verta Hickomall, and Miss Francis Misyard.
1935
Khunying Pinpak Pittayaphet (Jamnong Muangman) became the first Thai nurse to hold the position of Head of the Nursing Department, succeeding Miss Mildred Porter.
Expansion and Institutional Advancement (1932–1973)
1942When the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University separated to become the University of Medical Sciences, the nursing school moved under the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.
1956
Nursing education was upgraded to international standards, offering a bachelor's degree for the first time.
1972
Due to the expansion of nursing education, the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Sanitation was elevated to the Faculty of Nursing on June 23, 1972.
1973
The Nursing Division of Siriraj Hospital was established in this same period. Miss Uthit Sukhatat was appointed as the first Head of the Nursing Division on October 1, 1973 overseeing 2,630 personnel with the ultimate goal of "providing nursing services that impress the recipients".
