Welcome, Prof. Klaas Postema, Professor of Rehabilitation, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands, to serve as the “Siriraj International Visiting Scholar” at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, starting from November 28th – December 9th, 2022. While on his duty at Siriraj, Prof. Postema also donated his book “Pedorthic Footwear – Assessment and Treatment” (to share his knowledge of different aspects concerning pedorthic footwear with all the different professionals that are involved in foot care) to the Siriraj Medical Library.

November 28th, 2022, Clin. Prof. Supat Vanichakarn, Secretary General of Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under the Royal Patronage, Mr. Natapanu Nopakun, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Vicharn Panich, Chairman of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Steering Committee, and Emer. Prof. Sompop Limpongsanurak, Chairman of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Selection Committee, issued a press release on the result of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program scholarship recipients for 2022 at the Chulabhorn conference room, 2nd floor of Syamindra Building, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University.

Thirteen applicants from seven institutes were nominated for Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program in 2022. Only five successful applicants qualified for the criteria of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program. The Selection Committee selected the scholarship recipients and presented to the Board of Trustees which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President. The final decision was made on October 31st, 2022.

Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program was founded on November 20th, 2008, in accordance with the 2nd/2008 consensus of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Committee. Following in the footsteps of HRH Prince Mahidol of Songkla, the initiative aims to motivate and encourage Thai youths studying in the health fields to pursue a dedicated life for the benefit of mankind. The steering committee, working committee, and selection committee are in charge of selecting applicants who satisfy the program’s criteria and presenting their names to the Board of Trustees, of which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a member, for a final decision.

Mr. Pranaidej Hengswat

 

Mr. Pranaidej Hengswat is a sixth-year medical student at Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. He is particularly interested in the use of engineered comprehensive oncolytic herpes simplex virus-1 (ecoHSV-1) to modulate tumor-immune microenvironment in Cholangiocarcinoma.

The research’s core idea is to develop a virus that does not harm normal human cells but can infect and destroy cancer cells. Furthermore, the virus should be designed to be capable of causing anti-tumor inflammation within the tumor microenvironment. Mr. Pranaidej is engaged in such technology at the laboratory research level, considering it is vital for the future development of innovative alternative therapies for cancer patients in Thailand and throughout the world.

The Prince Mahidol Award 2022 in the field of Public Health is awarded to Dr. Douglas R. Lowy, MD., and Dr. John T. Schiller, Ph.D., (both from the USA), and Prof. Ian H. Frazer, MB.ChB, M.D., from the UK/Australia.

There were 88 nominations from 34 countries. The Scientific Advisory Committee carefully screened all candidates from the year 2019 – 2022 and subsequently submitted a short list of candidates to the International Award Committee who made a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the meeting of the Board of Trustees held on October 31st, 2022, during which the final decision on the Prince Mahidol Award 2022 was made.

During November 18th – 21st, 2022, Asst. Prof. Kanchalit Thanomkitti, a Lecturer of the Division of Hair Disorders and Hair Transplantation, Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended “the 12th World Congress of Hair Research 2022″ in Melbourne, Australia, to deliver a poster presentation on the topic, “Efficacy and Safety of Topical 5% Azelaic Acid Solution Versus 2% Minoxidil Solution in the Treatment of Female Pattern Hair Loss “. This congress focused on new knowledge and emerging treatments for hair disease.

 

Asst. Prof. Nuttasith Larpparisuth of the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and delivered an oral presentation on the topic “Impact of Acute Kidney Injury and Renal Recovery in Deceased Donor to Kidney Transplant Outcome: Report from Thai Transplant Registry” at the Asian Transplant Week 2022 (ATW 2022) during November 16th – 20th, 2022, in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The ATW 2022 covered hot topics and up-to-date findings in the various fields of transplantation. Also, it allowed all participants to hear renowned speakers/delegates and share their feedback and ideas within the transplantation community!

 

During November 17th – 19th, 2022, Asst. Prof. Peenida Skulratanasak from the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended the annual congress “Asian Transplantation Week 2022 (ATW 2022)” in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and presented a poster presentation on the topic “Difference in Incidence of de novo Donor Specific Antibodies Occurrence among each HLA-DQ Mismatches in Kidney Transplant Patients: A Cohort Study in Thai Population.”

The ATW 2022 (under the theme “Dream Bigger: Moving to the Next Level of Asian Transplantation”) is an annual congress of the Korean Society for Transplantation (KST) that has brought over 1,000 surgeons and specialists in the field of transplantation from Asia Pacific Region to broaden the medical knowledge and strengthening the personal and professional networks while attended the exciting scientific programs. In addition, the host city of Seoul also offers a chance for all visitors to experience a dynamic metropolis!
