The Department of Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital was initially founded as one of the divisions in the Department of Microbiology by Professor Sukhum Patrakhom back in 1964. At that time Dr. Pirat Panpatana was appointed as the first Head of the Division of Immunology. During those early years, the Division of Immunology was practically still operated in close conjunction with the Division of Virology, headed by Dr. Prasert Thongcharoen.
Until 1978, the new era of this unit began to take shape. Leaded by Dr. Suttipant Sarasombath, the Division became one of the major forces behind the development of Immunology in Thailand. The first Thai Immunology textbook by the Division has been an important reference for students and academicians nationwide since 1980. The hybridoma laboratory, opened in 1981, had sparked myriad of works using monoclonal antibodies. In that same year the Division also began the postgraduate program in Immunology. Later, the advance in Molecular Biology and Cellular Immunology has shaped the research of the Division and became its forte.
With the remarkable progress of the Division in all aspects came the increasing need for workforce and optimal resources. So the Division was raised to be the Department of Immunology officially in 1993.
