First Time in Asia! Siriraj Accomplished Combined Heart-Liver-Kidney Transplantation in One Patient !!
On May 2nd, 2018, Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital chaired the press conference on the occasion that Siriraj Hospital accomplished the combined heart-liver-kidney transplantation in one patient for the first time in Asia. The press conference held at the G floor of Chalermphrakiet Building, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and witnessed by Associate Professor Visit Vamvanit, Director of Siriraj Hospital, Associate Professor Dr. Yongyut Sirivatanauksorn, Vice Director of Siriraj Hospital and liver transplant surgeon, Associate Professor Pranya Sakiyalak, the cardiac transplant surgeon, Associate Professor Thawatchai Taweemonkongsap, the kidney transplant surgeon, Dr. Srisakul Chirakarnjanakorn, the cardiologist and cardiac transplant expert, and Mr. Rachanon Rungsawang, the patient who received the transplantation.
Professor Watanapa explained that the transplantation took almost 12 hours, starting with heart, liver, and kidney respectively. The organs development after the transplantation is in the satisfied level, the patient took 83 days of recovering in the hospital and the three transplanted organs functioning well in his daily life. Professor Watanapa continued that the combined heart-liver-kidney transplantation has been initiated since 1989 and apparently reported only 14 cases in the USA. This time it was count as the first time in Thailand and in Asia continent! However, this transplantation cannot be possible and accomplish if we are not receiving the generosity from all organ donors.
