During November 5th – 7th, 2024, Asst. Prof. Nida Jareemit from Gynaecologic Oncology Division, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, delivered a poster presentation on title “Risk of high grade or more severe lesions and associated factors among women aged > 60 years with abnormal cervical cancer screening: A multicenter study” at the 2023 Annual Global Meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS 2023), Korea.
The study highlighted that elderly women who have never undergone screening or those with high-grade cytology face a higher risk of developing severe lesions. Additionally, women with a history of CIN2+ are more prone to increased risk. The research suggests that extending cervical cancer screening beyond the recommended age should not be a one-size-fits-all approach but should be personalized based on individual screening history. Moreover, the decision to continue screening beyond the recommended age should carefully consider factors such as age-specific disease prevalence, mortality rates, cost-effectiveness, and the burden of treatment and surveillance.
These findings contribute valuable evidence for health policymakers to determine whether cervical cancer screening should be extended beyond the recommended age.
