New Research Publication: Effect of replacing a wooden keel with a polymer keel in the sach foot on walking energy expenditure in transtibial prosthesis users: a pilot study in a resource-limited setting

🦶🏽“Effect of replacing a wooden keel with a polymer keel in the SACH foot on walking energy expenditure in transtibial prosthesis users: a pilot study in a resource-limited setting”

This study compares energy expenditure in unilateral transtibial prosthesis users when using a prototype SACH foot with a polymer keel and a local SACH foot with a wooden keel. Physiological Cost Index (PCI) and heart rate were measured. Although the results showed no significant difference in mean PCI between the two conditions, the effect size suggested a tendency toward lower PCI with the polymer-keel SACH foot. These findings indicate that polymer keels may improve walking efficiency, supporting the development of alternative prosthetic foot materials for developing countries.

New Research Publication: The Efficacy of Modified Total Contact Orthosis in Decreasing Pain While Walking Indoors in Patients with Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction: A Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind Controlled Trial

We are pleased to announce that Asst. Lecturer Thana Charoenvitvorakul, Hathaichanok Arunsaengsin, and Aphinat Chirawattanaphan have contributed as co-authors to the newly published research article:

“The Efficacy of Modified Total Contact Orthosis in Decreasing Pain While Walking Indoors in Patients with Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction: A Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind Controlled Trial”

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a modified total contact orthosis (modified TCO) in reducing pain during indoor walking among patients with posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD). Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: the study group using a modified TCO and a control group receiving a sham orthosis. After two weeks, the modified TCO group demonstrated reduced posterior tibial tendon pain during indoor activities and improved overall foot function compared with the control group, with no serious adverse effects reported.

New Research Publication: Effects of a Home-Based Fall Prevention Program in Older Lower Limb Prosthesis Users: A Randomized Controlled Trial

“Effects of a Home-Based Fall Prevention Program in Older Lower Limb Prosthesis Users: A Randomized Controlled Trial”

This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of an eight-week home-based exercise and fall prevention education program tailored for older lower-limb prosthesis (LLP) users. The intervention showed no significantly greater improvements in dynamic balance, static postural stability, or balance confidence compared with usual care in individuals with relatively high functional mobility. Future strategies may need more intensive or longer-duration exercises to achieve meaningful improvements in balance performance in this population.

“Restoring Culturally Essential Floor-Sitting in Transfemoral Prosthesis Users: A Six-Week Pilot Randomized Within-Subject Trial”

This pilot study assesses how the Asian Transfemoral Socket (ATS) accommodates culturally important floor-sitting postures, including cross-legged and side-sitting, through its socket design. Findings suggest improved floor-sitting ability and patient-reported outcomes among transfemoral prosthesis users, with no statistically significant differences in mobility. These results highlight the socket’s potential to support functional mobility and participation in cultural activities across many Asian societies.

New Research Publication: Mechanical evaluation of 3D-printed above-knee prosthetic sockets using a biofidelic hyperelastic silicone limb surrogate

We are pleased to announce that Asst. Prof. Dr.Kazuhiko Sasaki has contributed as a co-author to the newly published research article:

“Mechanical evaluation of 3D-printed above-knee prosthetic sockets using a biofidelic hyperelastic silicone limb surrogate”

This study investigates transfemoral prosthetic socket strength under ISO static loading conditions using rigid Plaster of Paris (PoP) and a biofidelic hyperelastic silicone limb surrogate. Results show that silicone better mimics biological soft tissue by absorbing stress and redistributing contact pressure, whereas rigid PoP may lead to premature distal failure. These findings support a more physiologically representative pre-clinical approach to evaluate the strength and durability of 3D-printed prosthetic sockets.
