The 2nd ASEAN and Allied Countries Medical Research Network Meeting
On September 12, 2013, Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, presided at the opening of an annual research symposium called “The second ASEAN Medical Research Network Meeting”, along with Professor Dr. Ruengpung Sutthent, Deputy Dean for Research, at Siriraj Medical Research Center, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. This is a two-day event (12 – 13 September) held for the delegates from 10 ASEAN countries to encourage and enhance research collaborations among ASEAN countries. Each delegate came from top universities in their countries; to name a few, Health Sciences University of Mongolia (Associate Professor Dr. Oyungerel Ravjir), International University & Sen Sok IU Hospital of Cambodia (Assistant Professor Dr. Anderson Amirthanathan), University of Medicine, Mandalay, Myanmar (Professor Dr. Saw Kler Ku), Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (Dr. Budiman Bela), University of Malaya, Malaysia, (Dr. Tee Kok Keng), University of Health Sciences, Lao PDR (Dr. Visanou Hanesana), Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam, (Associate Professor Nguyen Vu Trung), University of the Philippines (Dr. Regina Berba), National University Health System, Singapore, (Associate Professor Dr. Tiow – Suan Sim), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (Associate Professor Dr. Lin Naing), and Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital (Assistant Professor Dr. Sathien Sukpanichnant.
For the research symposium, the topics were divided into two groups: communicable diseases such as HIV/Aids and TB, and Non-communicable diseases. There was also a discussion on “Strengthening Medical Lab for services and research: Accreditation with ASEAN standard and international standard (ISO 15189).
On September 13, an international conference was held under the topics “Innovations in Research” and “Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology.” There were a lot of interesting lectures on these topics. For example, “Regional Collaboration in Postgraduate Training” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Ngoc Hoat from Hanoi Medical University (Vietnam), “Perception of Medical Students in Clinical Learning” by Assist. Prof. Dr. Bunthoeun Im from University of Health Sciences (Cambodia), “Medical Curriculum Development in Mongolia” by Prof. Dr. Otgonbayar Radnaa from Health Sciences University of Mongolia, “Postgraduate Research Studies at the University of Medicine 1” by Prof. Dr. Myat Thandar from University of Medicine 1 (Yangon, Myanmar), and “Transforming Research into Innovation” by Dr. Kant Weerakant, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital (Thailand).
