Preventive and Social Medicine – About

History of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine

In the year 1958, the unit of preventive medicine was originally set up in the Department of Medicine with 3 full-time staffs: Professor Mukda Trishnananda, Dr. Pairoj Oonsombat, and Mrs. Benjang Tiengpitak. This unit was promoted sequentially becoming an independent unit with its own single-room office, 32 square meters, on the ground floor of the main administrative building. With the increasing role of disease prevention within the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Department of Preventive & Social Medicine was, then, officially founded in the year 1969. As a result, a special budget of 1.5 million baths under the fiscal year of 1971 was allocated to build the official building of the Department which was situated next to the Pa-Ob building. This 2-storeyed building was completed in 1975 and used as the permanent official office of the Department since then. The building was later extended to be a 6-floor building as seen nowadays.

Regarding the manpower of the Department, there are 15 instructors, 8 paramedical personnel, 4 administrative personnel and 13 general workers currently employed in the Department.
