Short course Training in Dermatopathology

Duration: 12 weeks
Educational objective: Enhancing capacity in dermatopathologic slide interpretation and clinical correlation
Course outline:
- Attend interpretation and sign out procedure for department skin biopsy specimens
- Attend clinico-pathological conference
- Attend Out Patient Department for clinical skill
- Tutorial session in dermatopathology

Teaching Methods
Sign out procedures
- Skin biopsies taken from patients who attend skin clinic will be examined and interpreted by the course director. Approximately 30 slides will be examined each week on Monday morning, 9-12 am. Interesting and demonstrative cases will be selected for clinico-pathological conference in the afternoon.
- Trainee can enhance his/her skill by trying to interpret those slides by his/her own before this session to compare his/her ability with an experienced person.
Clinico-pathological conference
- Enhancing skill in histopathological interpretation by clinical correlation
- 3- 5 cases will be selected from all routine cases at each time.
- Selected cases will be
- Demonstrative typical cases
- Need clinical correlation for definite diagnosis due to overlapping histopathologic pictures
- Follow up biopsy of interested cases for chronologic study
- Examine all biopsy cases at the clinic before conference
Out Patient Observation
- Enhancing skill for clinical correlation by experiencing clinical manifestation with trainer
- 25 -30 cases will be seen each 3-hour-period at general skin clinic.
Tutorial
- To advance knowledge for trainee, the course director will give lectures in each topic 1 period/ week according to the following schedule
- 8 weeks in inflammatory skin diseases:
1) psoriasiform dermatitis
2) spongiotic dermatitis
3) interface dermatitis
4) lichenoid dermatitis, vasculitis
5) granulomatous dermatitis
6) nodular & diffuse dermatitis
7) changes of fibers & ground substances
8) panniculitis
- 4 weeks in skin tumors:
1) epithelial tumors
2) melanocytic tumors
3) appendageal tumors
4) mesodermal tumors
Journal club
- Trainee will select 2 articles from well-established journals in dermatopathology to present and discuss with trainer each week.
Question & Answer
- It is the following process from self-study.
- Trainee will select approximately 10 slides from the collection to consult with trainer for strengthening skill in interpretation.
Self-study
- It is the most effective way to learn dermatopathology.
- Dermatopathological slides collection is composed of more than 5,000 slides.
- The slides were collected by pattern that encourages practicing skill and in the way to support tutorial session.
- Trainee should study the collection according to tutorial schedule such as in the first week the collection of psoriasiform dermatitis should be reviewed by trainee, and the problematic slide will be selected for question & answer session.
