Telerehabilitation: A Revolutionary Innovation in Elderly Health Recovery

Asst. Prof.Ekasame Vanitcharoenkul Department of Orthopaedics Surgery, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

A Silent Threat to the Elderly: Hip Fracture

As the aging population rapidly increases, hip fractures have become a major public health concern, deeply affecting the quality of life, physical abilities of the elderly, and the overall healthcare system of the nation.

Challenges in Rehabilitation

After surgical treatment for hip fractures — whether through internal fixation or hip replacement — patients may experience pain relief and improved mobility. However, oAsst. Prof.Ekasame Vanitcharoenkul Department of Orthopaedics Surgery and Physical Therapy Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol Universitylder adults still face physical decline, loss of independence, and limited movement. This immobility often leads to muscle atrophy and rapid deterioration, especially in the early postoperative period. Therefore, rehabilitation through physical therapy is not merely an option but an urgent necessity for these patients.

Limitations of Traditional Physical Therapy

Although physical therapists play a vital role in restoring strength and mobility, many elderly patients struggle to attend sessions due to transportation difficulties, lack of caregivers to accompany them, or existing health conditions. Consequently, patients are often provided with printed guides or pre-recorded videos for home exercise, which lack real-time interaction between therapist and patient.
