As we realize, cancer is the leading cause of deaths in Thailand and increasingly affects both social and economic status of the country. In the past, treatment of cancer patients in Thailand has not been modernized up to the level of western countries. Advances in basic and clinical research in cancer have also been hampered by the shortage of qualified medical and research personnel as well as inadequate funding. To effectively manage such problem requires many significant factors, particularly, a strong leadership with clear vision, aspiration and ability to mobilize resources from the government and the private sectors for continued success of the operations for the benefits of Thai people.

Professor Dr. HRH Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol realizes the danger of cancer and its effect on society and economy of the country, especially the sufferings of patients and members of the family. To help alleviate the sufferings of Thai people, Her Royal Highness has initiated the establishment of the first comprehensive cancer centre in Thailand within Chulabhorn Research Institute to commemorate the auspicious 72nd Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The objective was to create an institution of academic excellence that can help train medical personnel to provide effective cancer treatment comparable to developed countries. The centre also houses cancer-related research such as translation research, clinical research and community research, leading to appropriate and modern diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer, with the principal aim of giving patients opportunity to become cured of cancer and improving the quality of life of patients.
