Bernd Rode Award is granted to outstanding scientific and higher education collaborations between European and South-East-Asian universities in the framework of ASEA-UNINET. It is associated with financial support up to a maximum of € 5.000 to enhance and extend the research possibilities in the context of projects backed by ASEA-UNINET (e.g. travel expenses, research stay) and is given in three different categories as follows:
1. Junior (Individual contributions conducted within the framework of ASEA-UNINET, by applicants up to 5 years after completion of their Ph.D. studies)
2 . Senior (Individual contributions, including all publications and projects carried out in the framework of ASEA-UNINET, by applicants over a period of 5 years after completion of their Ph.D. studies)
3. Project-based collaborative research conducted in the framework of ASEA-UNINET

Basic requirements for an application:

  • The applicant has participated in a finished or still ongoing ASEA-UNINET research project or research stay in the past 5 years.
  • This project was conducted in cooperation between at least one Austrian ASEA-UNINET member university and · at least one ASEA-UNINET member university from South-East-Asia and has been at least partially funded by ASEA-UNINET.
  • Furthermore, the project has already produced results that can be presented (e.g. joint publication).
  • The funds received from the Bernd Rode Award can be exclusively reinvested in future ASEA-UNINET research projects and collaborations.

Purpose

To provide foundation training in research to enable outstanding graduates from Mahidol University, Thailand to proceed to a Ph.D. degree at the University of Liverpool in the UK. The Ph.D. degree will be in any Science and Health & Life Sciences subjects covered by the University of Liverpool.

Eligibility

  • Thai citizenship
  • Awarded/expected 1st class degree with a GPA of 3.5 and above, from Mahidol University in related disciplines or currently a staff or faculty member at Mahidol University.
  • English proficiency test with a minimum score that fulfills the requirements of the University of Liverpool. (IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or TOEFL Internet Based Test 88/89 with minimum scores in components as follows: Listening and Writing –21, Reading –22, Speaking -23)

  • Investigating the role of calmodulin ln immunodeficiency and muscular hypotonia.
  • Developing cross-linked glycan for potential colonic drug delivery.
  • A comparative functional genomics approach towards unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying floral organ photosynthesis.
  • Dissecting human INPP5K: cell biology, structural determination by X-ray crystallography and enzymology of a key protein implicated in muscular dystrophy, insulin signaling, spastic paraplegias, and Parkinsonism.
  • The role of a novel point mutation in the small calcium-binding protein, CaBP4, in a rare form of inherited human epilepsy.
  • Mechanisms of interspecies signaling in nematodes.
  • Characterization and engineering of bacterial metabolic organelles for enhanced photosynthetic performance.
