The SiCOREs and SiCORE-M 2023 Retreat Meeting – RED Program Workshop

On Sunday, November 12, 2023, the Center of Excellence, encompassing SiCORE-M and the Center of Excellence in various diseases, including SiCORE-Allergy, SiCORE-Dengue, SiCORE-PM&SP, SiCORE-CVD, SiCORE-DO, and SiCORE-MSB, was privileged to have Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, serve as the chairman and moderator of the Retreat Meeting 2023 at the Kamolporn Meeting Room, The Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok.

The workshop focused on the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital’s internal supporting mechanism, the Research Excellence Development Program (RED). The morning session was a World Café-style brainstorming, with participants divided into groups to discuss four key questions: Support for sustainability, HR development, Research Performance Evaluation, and Research Ecosystem. The goal was to gather insights and collaboratively address challenges and solutions identified by stakeholders.

In the afternoon session, four group discussion facilitators presented the issues identified during the morning brainstorming, summarizing proposed solutions, and exchanging ideas collaboratively. Assoc. Prof. Sith Sathornsumetee, M.D., Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, and Prof. Thananya Boonyasirinant, M.D., Head of Siriraj Excellent Innovation Center (Si-EIC), graced the session with their presence. They provided valuable insights, shared perspectives, and exchanged experiences with forefront researchers from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.

On this occasion, the Center of Research Excellence expresses deep gratitude to the Dean, Executives, and researchers within the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital for their tremendous support and active participation. SiCORE-M is incredibly optimistic about continued support and collaboration from all stakeholders in the upcoming year.

Siriraj Faculty Abroad at ‘ISPOR Europe 2023’ in Denmark

During November 12th – 15th, 2023, Pharmacist Chayanis Kositamongkol, a Research Assistant from the Department of Research and Innovations and the Department of Medicine, Faulty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended the international conference ‘ISPOR Europe 2023 (International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research)’ in Copenhagen, Denmark, to present a poster on the topic “Cost-utility and budget impact analyses of cervical cancer screening using self-collected sample kit for HPV DNA testing in Thailand.” Pharmacist Kositamongkol commits to publishing her research at an international level and fostering international collaboration.

The 5th Research and Innovation Advisory Committee Meeting for Siriraj Center of Research Excellence Onsite Visit in 2023

On the prestigious date of October 20th, 2023, Professor Apichat Asavamongkolkul, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, presided over the 5th Research and Innovation Advisory Committee (RIAC) meeting. The occasion marked the gathering of prominent and remarkable scholars from renowned institutions, with some joining virtually.

The illustrious scholars included:

  7. Prof. Kiat Ruxrungtham, Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University and Scientific Chair of the Chula Vaccine Research Center (ChulaVRC).

On this occasion, the executive members from Mahidol University, such as the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, and the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, joined in welcoming the RIAC members, making this meeting even more meaningful and memorable.

This meeting provided a vital platform for in-depth discussions on the research performance of SiCOREs, research management, and strategic research direction at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. Six Centers of Research Excellence, i.e., SiCORE-Allergy and Immunology, SiCORE-Cancer Precision Medicine & Systems Pharmacology, SiCORE-Dengue and Emerging Pathogens, SiCORE-Cardiovascular Disease, SiCORE-Diabetes and Obesity and SiCORE-Metabolomics and Systems Biology delivered presentation of their research plan and direction to the RIAC committees.

The insights and recommendations from the esteemed members of the RIAC promise to drive a significant transformation in our research endeavors. Following the meeting, an elegant dinner reception took place on the 12th floor of the SiMR building, fostering continued discussions in a relaxed and amiable atmosphere.

In this luminous context, SiCORE-M and SiCOREs express our heartfelt appreciation to the RIAC members for their valuable contributions and unwavering support. Their remarkable expertise and experiences continue to be a guiding light in our pursuit of research excellence.

Siriraj Being Awarded “The APAAACI’s Center of Excellence 2023”

On October 24th, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Pongsakorn Tantilipikorn, M.D. Ph.D., the Director of Siriraj Center of Research and Excellence in Allergy and Immunology (SiCORE Allergy & Immunology), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and his team, were receiving the prestigious award ‘The Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology’s Center of Excellence (ACE)’ at ‘The Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology International Conference 2023 (APAAACI 2023)’ hosted by ‘The Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (APAAACI)’ and ‘The Allergy and Clinical Immunology Society of Singapore (ACIS)’ during October 23rd – 26th, 2023 in Singapore. The theme of the Conference is “The Innovation Revolution: Allergy, Asthma and Immunology”.

The APAAACI Center of Excellence (ACE) is awarded to a multidisciplinary academic medical institution/center which actively practices and promotes scientific and clinical innovations, education, research and advocacy in the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

Siriraj Faculty Abroad at the ‘COSTEM 2023’ in Germany

During October 19th – 21st, 2023, Researcher Piriya Luangwattananun, Ph.D., of the Division of Molecular Medicine and Siriraj Center of Research Excellence for Cancer Immunotherapy (SiCORE-CIT), Research Department, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended ‘The 8th Congress on Controversies in Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies (COSTEM 2023)’ in Berlin, Germany, and presented a research poster on the topic “Identification of Human Leukocyte Antigen-A*0201-Restricted Epitopes of the Folate Receptor Alpha Antigen for Activation of Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes”. The participation of Researcher Luangwattananun is poised to contribute significantly to the research development at Siriraj Hospital. The insights gained from participating in COSTEM 2023 not only provide cutting-edge information in the realm of cancer immunotherapy on a global scale but also illuminate the current perspectives of clinicians regarding this innovative approach to treating cancer. This wealth of knowledge will seamlessly integrate into ongoing research initiatives and future project development at Siriraj Hospital.

The 8th Congress on Controversies in Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies (COSTEM 2023) is an annual event to share scientific research, clinical experience, and ongoing developments in Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies. Siriraj Faculty Abroad at WCN 2023 in Canada

Between October 15th – 19th, 2023, Lecturer Tatchaporn Ongphichetmetha, M.D., from the Division of Clinical Epidemiology, Department of Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended ‘The World Federation of Neurology’s XXVI World Congress of Neurology (WCN 2023)’ in Montreal, Canada, and presented a poster presentation on the topic “The Utility of Neurofilament Light Chain in Etiologic Classification in Altered Mental Status”.

The WCN 2023 brought the up-to-date broad field of neurology, from tropical neurology to molecular genetics. Siriraj Faculty Abroad at ISCFS 2023 in USA

Asst. Prof. Sarut Chaisrisawadisuk, MD, FRCST, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Consultant and Craniofacial Surgeon from the Division of Plastic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and delivered a research poster presentation on the topic “Early Bone Reformation after Cranial Vault Remodelling for Sagittal Craniosynostosis: 3D Measurement and Reformation Pattern” at the “20th Congress of the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery (ISCFS 2023)” between September 5th – 8th, 2023, in Seattle, USA. Asst. Prof. Chaisrisawadisuk aims to utilise 3D analysis technology which is crucial in enhancing treatment outcomes for sagittal craniosynostosis, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of bone reformation patterns in significant cranial defects following synostosis surgery.

The International Society of Craniofacial Surgery (ISCFS) was founded in 1983. The organization represents multispeciality surgeons and others with an interest in and focus on craniofacial surgery.

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) Visits SiCORE-Cancer PM&SP

On August 8th – 9th, 2023, the Faculty of Medicine Siriaj  Hospital, Mahidol University, successfully hosted the inaugural Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) for the Center of Research Excellence in Cancer Precision Medicine and Systems Pharmacology (SiCORE-Cancer PM&SP) Onsite Visit in 2023. Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, presided over the meeting, along with Assoc. Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and Foreign Relations, Assoc. Prof. Sith Sathornsumetee, Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Assist. Prof. Dr.Woraphat Ratta–apha, Assoc. Prof. Oranee Sanmaneechai,  Assist. Prof. Tachjaree Panchalee Boonbowornpong, Deputy Manager from Siriraj Center of Research Excellence Management Unit (SiCORE–M), and Assist. Prof. Somponnat Sampattavanich, Director of SiCORE in Cancer Precision Medicine and Systems Pharmacology (SiCORE-PM&SP), members from the research team, including Assoc.   1. Prof. Andrew Futreal, Professor of the Department of Genomic Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center, The University of Texas, delivered the lecture “Learning from every patient: Challenges and opportunities.”
  2. Prof. Christopher L. Corless, Professor of Pathology at Oregon Health & Science University, provided a lecture entitled “Combining multi-omic approaches in the analysis of cancer biopsies.”

On this occasion, we received an honor from Prof. Ruby Yun-Ju Huang, an invited speaker from National Taiwan University, for a lecture on “EMPreSS (Epithelial Mesenchymal Precision Spectrum Scoring) in Cancer Cell Plasticity.”

The event served as a platform for profound discussions and constructive feedback, driving the advancement of research and innovation within SiCORE-Cancer PM&SP. The other SAB Onsite Visit Program activities include a Lab and SICRES Facility tour, Research projects consultation for researchers, and Ph.D. Students. The two-day session ended with a Close discussion with Executive faculty Members. We derived various consequential comments and recommendations for leveraging research quality and impact, furthering the cause of scientific progress in Cancer research.

Between August 3rd – 4th, 2023, Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D., Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Assoc. Prof. Sith Sathornsumetee, M.D., Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Assoc. Prof. Oranee Sanmaneechai, M.D., Asst. Prof. Woraphat Ratta–apha, M.D., Asst. Prof. Tachjaree Panchalee Boonbowornpong, M.D., Deputy Manager of Siriraj Center of Research Excellence Management Unit (SiCORE–M), Prof. Rungroj Krittayaphong, M.D., from SiCORE-Cardiovascular Diseases (SiCORE-CVD), and the researchers from COhort of antithrOmbotic use and clinical outcomes in patients with Atrial Fibrillation (COOL-AF) phase 2 COOL-AF convened the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) onsite visit in 2023!

We received the honor from SAB members: Prof. Gregory YH Lip, from the University of Liverpool and Assoc. Prof. Jin Joo Park, from Seoul National University, to be special guest speakers. The Onsite Visit program commenced with inspiring lectures, followed by the research progress presentations and an output summary of ongoing projects from the research network. Then, the research facility tour, such as SICRES, could bring potential research collaboration in clinical trials. Another impressive session was the close discussion with the Dean and the Executives, which brought several noteworthy comments and recommendations to leverage the research quality that should be extendable for a national impact.
