SIRIRAJ Makerspace

By Lecturer Dollaporn Anopas, PhD
Deputy Director of Siriraj Excellent Innovation Center: SiEIC
Program Committee of Master of Science Program in Biodesign in Medicine

The inception of the SIRIRAJ Makerspace originated from the clear vision of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital to lay the foundation for a robust and sustainable innovation ecosystem. With the full support of the Dean, Professor Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D., this initiative was driven by the strong belief that providing a space to enable creative ideas to transition from mere imagination into tangible creations is the key to accelerating the concrete and rapid growth of medical innovation.

This space was born out of a strong collaboration among the Biodesign in Medicine Program, the Department of Parasitology, and the Siriraj Excellence Innovation Center (SiEIC). The Biodesign in Medicine Program incorporated design thinking processes and the identification of true clinical unmet needs as the crucial foundation for cultivating a new generation of innovators, while the Siriraj Excellence Innovation Center acts as the bridge that propels these innovations toward real-world applications. This synergistic collaboration thus reflects the power of systematic teamwork, which is the core of modern medical innovation.

When innovators are situated in a room surrounded by state-of-the-art tools and equipment, they can physically build prototypes themselves and immediately test or discuss those prototypes with users or target groups. This inherently yields rapid and precise feedback, clearly highlighting both the strengths and the areas requiring improvement in their creations. This process ensures that the developed innovations truly answer the actual needs of the users and are practically applicable, preventing innovators from falling into the common trap of becoming overly infatuated with their own creations while ignoring the actual users’ feedback.

Therefore, the SIRIRAJ Makerspace is akin to a “library of innovation”—a space that allows creators to continuously test, refine, and develop their prototypes until they arrive at a solution that genuinely addresses the needs of both the users and the target audiences, before advancing to a broader scale-up phase.

The SIRIRAJ Makerspace is fully equipped with tools and machinery to support the creation of both low-fidelity and mid-fidelity innovation prototypes. These include 3D printers for forming objects using plastic filaments and resins, 3D scanners for converting real-world physical objects into digital models for further development, lathes and milling machines for precision metal shaping, horizontal and vertical band saws for cutting various materials, laser machines for engraving and cutting acrylic pieces according to design, as well as sewing machines and other fundamental tools. All of these are essential pieces of equipment that fulfill every stage of the creation process.

However, beyond being a mere hub of tools and equipment, the SIRIRAJ Makerspace is a melting pot of knowledge where multidisciplinary professionals meet, exchange ideas, and collaborate with a shared objective: to create the best innovations for patients and society. Together, they aim to drive the sustainable growth of medical innovation for the enduring benefit of Thai society.
