Siriraj Faculty Abroad at University of Parma, Parma, Italy
From October 15th – 17th, 2025, the Oxford Nanopore Centre of Excellence (CoE), Department of Research, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, in collaboration with the Department of Food and Drug, University of Parma, Italy, organized a hands-on workshop titled “From Pore to Profile: A Workshop on Nanopore Microbiome Sequencing.”
The workshop brought together researchers and trainees from public and private institutions, with the objective of strengthening competencies in long-read sequencing technologies, microbiome analysis, and bioinformatics for applications in microbiology, food safety, agriculture, and applied genomics.
Lecturer Worarat Kruasuwan, Ph.D., served as a principal instructor throughout the 3-day programme, delivering key lectures and leading laboratory sessions covering:
• Introduction to Oxford Nanopore Technology and its applications in microbiome research
• Oxford Nanopore library preparation
• Flow cell loading
• Real-time monitoring of ONT sequencing
• Hands-on training in 16S rRNA gene amplification (PCR)
Participants also received practical training in DNA extraction and quality assessment, EPI2ME installation, and microbiome data analysis and visualization—guided by specialists, including Prof. Dr. Chiara Dall’Asta, Asst. Prof. Dr. Alessia Levante, and Mr. Emanuele Della Monica.
Over the three days, attendees completed a full sequencing workflow using Oxford Nanopore Technologies, from wet-lab preparation to cloud-based analysis, gaining practical skills crucial to contemporary research and precision food-safety surveillance.
We extend our gratitude to all speakers, participants, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA, MYCOBEANS project), and the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, for their support in making this international academic collaboration possible.
