The study highlighted that elderly women who have never undergone screening or those with high-grade cytology face a higher risk of developing severe lesions. Additionally, women with a history of CIN2+ are more prone to increased risk. The research suggests that extending cervical cancer screening beyond the recommended age should not be a one-size-fits-all approach but should be personalized based on individual screening history. Moreover, the decision to continue screening beyond the recommended age should carefully consider factors such as age-specific disease prevalence, mortality rates, cost-effectiveness, and the burden of treatment and surveillance.
These findings contribute valuable evidence for health policymakers to determine whether cervical cancer screening should be extended beyond the recommended age.
