Thalassemia is the most prevalentgenetic disease in Thailand.Approximately 35% of the Thaipopulation (18-20 million people) arecarriers. The Faculty of Medicine SirirajHospital is the world’s pioneer non-Mediterranean thalassemia research institute a distinction Siriraj has upheld since 1950.

The increasing life expectancy in Thailand’s population translates into a higher demand for age-specific health care. Senior citizens have health problems and disease progression that are different from patients in other age groups. Geriatric medicine and research allows doctors to understand, manage, and anticipate physical changes, health problems, and rehabilitation needs related to Thailand’s senior population. The Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital continues to focus on research that promotes improved health and the prevention of serious diseases that are common to Thailand’s senior population. Research topics include :

  • Dementia in senile people research, which investigates more effective ways to diagnose and treat dementia patients. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Worapan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Weerasak
Muangpaisan of the Department of Medicine are leading this study.
  • Geriatric research that endeavors to find better health promotion strategies and methods for prevention of common diseases in seniors. This research study was undertaken by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prasert Assantachai of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine. This research was later expanded into easy-to-read books on how to take better care of the elderly. These books have been well received by Thailand’s community of family caregivers.

Proteomics is a new large-scale study for systematically analyzing type, quantity, and function of proteins. Proteomics has been applied in medical research to help scientists understand pathogenesis of a disease that leads to biomarkers. This makes diagnosis faster and more accurate, resulting in better treatment efficiency and less complications and may finally lead to new medicine or vaccine with greater efficiency in treatment and prevention of a disease.

In Thailand, Proteomics has been focused on proteomics of common diseases and diseases with high healthcare, economic and societal burden. The main objectives are to diagnose, treat and monitor such diseases like diabetes, kidney stone, Dengue fever, Leptospirosis, Melioidosis, Alzheimer’s disease and thalassemia.

Advancement in the 21st century is revolutionizing medicine to be more precise and clinically tailored for individual patients. While we are equipped with more efficient drugs, choosing the right drug choice for a specific subgroup of patients is still an active area of research. In the past few years, more reports have shown that ethnicity contributes significantly towards the heterogeneous drug response. Understanding how the genetic backgrounds are associated with commonly observed variability in therapeutic sensitivity will help fulfill this critical research gap. More information
