Siriraj Develops AI Technology for Medical Imaging with Over 95% Accuracy
The Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has been developing an artificial intelligence (AI) program for chest X-ray interpretation since the COVID-19 pandemic to enhance efficiency in managing large numbers of patients. The development has continued steadily to the present day.
The AI program developed by Siriraj has received certification from The Royal College of Radiologists of Thailand (RCRT), demonstrating accuracy of over 95%, equivalent to expert interpretation. To date, the system has been utilized for more than 500,000 patients, with report generation time of less than 10 seconds per case. Siriraj has transferred this technology to over 145 hospitals under the Ministry of Public Health nationwide, with expectations to expand coverage to 450 hospitals by 2026.
Following the successful implementation of AI technology for chest X-ray interpretation, Siriraj has advanced the application of this technology to assist in reading computed tomography (CT) scans of the brain and breast imaging (mammograms). The hospital has collaborated with specialized private sector partners to jointly develop AI that understands the anatomical structure of Asian women’s breasts, which will contribute to better health outcomes for the Thai population.
This technological advancement represents Siriraj’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency while expanding access to quality medical imaging interpretation across Thailand’s healthcare system.
