On January 21st, 2021, Asst.Prof. Nantthasorn Zinboonyahgoon, Chief of Siriraj Pain Management Clinical Training Center, Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital delivered a virtual special talk on “Chronic Postsurgical Pain Syndrome across the Globe” to the Anesthesiology fellows, orthopedics, and pain residents at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Harvard Medical School, USA.

On January 10th, 2021, Asst.Prof. Nantthasorn Zinboonyahgoon, Chief of Siriraj Pain Management Clinical Training Center, Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital delivered a virtual talk at the First International Forum on Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine on Pain and Related Dysfunctions.
The International Forum was sponsored by Shanghai Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine in order to create a platform that brings together well-known experts in the field of pain medicine in China and abroad to address challenges of pain diagnosis and treatment and to share information of academic advancement.
On January 18th, 2021, Prof. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, along with the administrative members of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, joined an online discussion with the China Academy of Sciences on the topic “5G Technology for Future Collaboration in Healthcare Services, Education, and Research between Siriraj and China Academy of Sciences”.
On January 11th, 2021, Lect. Dr. Visnu Lohsiriwat, M.D. from Division of Head, Neck and Breast Surgery, Department of Surgery welcomed Dr. Teh Mei Sze from the University of Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia to undertake a short training course on “Breast Oncoplastic and Reconstruction” at Department of Surgery from January 11th – April 30th, 2021.

The Chinese Government Scholarship – AUN Program is now open for applications for ASEAN citizens who wish to pursue their Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in the People’s Republic of China.
The China-AUN Scholarship is a full scholarship established by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China for the ASEAN University Network (AUN) to sponsor students, teachers, and scholars from ASEAN nations to study in China and to enhance the academic exchange and mutual understanding between China and the ASEAN Member States.
Application Procedures:
Applicants have to complete the online application procedure at CGS Information Management System for International Students. (please visit http://www.csc.edu.cn/studyinchina or http://www.campuschina.org and click ‘Application online’ to log In)
After completion of the online application process, the applicants have to submit ONE set of paper application forms and other supporting documents to the AUN Secretariat by February 18th, 2021.

On January 7th, 2021, Prof. Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University signed the cooperation agreement with Prof. Zheng Guisen, Vice-Rector of Gansu University of Chinese Medicine, China to develop collaboration on the exchange of profession in Traditional Chinese Medicine in Thailand.
The virtual MOU signing ceremony was witnessed by the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand led by Dr. Wikit Prakaiharn, Deputy Director of Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Division of Alternative Medicine, Ms. Rungrawan Wiwatpiyawong, Chief Expert Representative of Gansu Provincial Commercial Representative officer in Thailand, executive board from Golden Jubilee Medical Center, Mahidol University, and the Gansu University of Chinese Medicine, China.

On January 4th, 2021, Assoc. Prof. Oranee Sanmaneechai, Deputy Manager of Siriraj Center of Research Excellence Management Unit (SiCORE-M), and SiCORE-M team along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pongsakorn Tantilipikorn, Director of SiCORE Allergy enthusiastically provide the scientific progress of SiCORE-Allergy through the 4th teleconference to SAB members, Prof. Rudolf Valenta from Medical University of Vienna, Prof. Giorgio Walter Canonica from Humanitas University and Prof. Stephen R. Durham from Imperial College London.
In this regard, the valuable recommendations from SAB is undoubtedly prove highly beneficial to our SiCORE-Allergy. With the given guidance, the research team will adjust the proposal and shall work on the provocation test accordingly. Simultaneously, they propose to submit the Provocation test proposal to Siriraj Institutional Review Board (SiRB) within the mid of January. At last, SiCORE–M would like to extend our sincere gratitude to SAB members for their continued support.

Congratulations! Lecturer Dr. Kusuma Chaiyasoot of Division of Clinical Nutrition, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has completed her Doctoral Progam (Ph.D.) in Obesity Studies at the Centre for Obesity Research, University College London (UCL), UK, during May 1st, 2016 – December 31st, 2020.
During her studies, Lecturer Dr. Kusuma has an opportunity to deliver a poster presentation on the topic “Identifying factors associated with weight-loss and metabolic success after bariatric surgery”. After her graduation, Lecturer Dr. Kusuma will continue her position at the Division of Clinical Nutrition to provide good care for the patients with obesity, and to train the medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals to deliver good care to people with obesity, and lastly, to research in obesity field!
“Obesity is a condition in which excess adipose tissue (body fat) has accumulated in the body, leading to adverse health effects. Obesity increases the risk of developing several diseases; for example, type 2 diabetes (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), certain types of cancer, and psychological problems, leading to impaired quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. Thailand is currently ranked second in ASEAN for the most obese countries. The prevalence of obesity in Thai adults was 37.5% in 2014, resulting in a significant economic burden. Nonetheless, obesity specialists in Thailand are currently scarce.
To provide good care for people with obesity, a well-established multidisciplinary team including obesity nurse specialists, obesity physicians, surgeons, endoscopists, dieticians, psychologists, etc., is necessary. People with obesity thus can be well-informed and supported by various modalities: lifestyle modification, medical and surgical weight-loss interventions, as well as the treatment for obesity co-morbidities. More importantly, identifying people at risk for obesity using clinical, genetic and/or physiological predictors can be useful for early detection and treatment. In addition, training medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals to deliver good care to people with obesity to handle the obesity pandemic is a priority. Furthermore, there is substantial room for research in obesity field. Study in gut hormones, genetics, metabolomics, gut microbiota, etc., could lead to better understanding in the pathophysiology of obesity and potentially discover a new treatment to tackle the obesity pandemic!”
