On Monday, February 19, 2024, the Center of Research Excellence and the Siriraj Center of Research Excellence in Metabolomic and Systems Biology (SiCORE-MSB) had the distinct honor of engaging in a fruitful discussion with Emeritus Professor Jeremy Nicholson, Pro Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences and Executive Director of the Australian National Phenome Centre (ANPC) at Murdoch University, who serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in SiCORE-MSB. Joining him were his esteemed colleagues: Professor Julien Wist, Deputy Director of the ANPC, and Professor Elaine Holmes, Head of Computational and Systems Medicine at the ANPC.

Representing the Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Assist. Prof. Dr. Woraphat Ratta-apha, Head of the Center of Research Excellence, and Prof. Oranee Sanmaneechai, Assoc. Prof. Prawej Mahawithitwong and Assist. On Thursday, November 30, 2023, the Center of Research Excellence and Siriraj Center of Research Excellence in Allergy and Immunology (SiCORE-Allergy) convened the “Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) Onsite Visit Meeting at Siriraj Medical Research Building (SiMR), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.”

This distinguished meeting welcomed two esteemed SAB members, namely Prof. Giorgio Walter Canonica, Senior Consultant at the Personalized Medicine Asthma & Allergy Clinic-Humanitas Research Hospital in Milano, Italy, and Prof. Ruby Pawankar, Executive Director- APAAACI, the Department of Pediatrics at Nippon Medical School, Tokyo, Japan.

Assist. Prof. Woraphat Ratta-apha, Head of Center of Research Excellence, representing the Dean and Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital,  along with Prof. Oranee Sanmaneechai, Deputy Head of Center of Research Excellence, were honored to extend a warm welcome and actively participate in the meeting.

On Sunday, November 12, 2023, the Center of Excellence, encompassing SiCORE-M and the Center of Excellence in various diseases, including SiCORE-Allergy, SiCORE-Dengue, SiCORE-PM&SP, SiCORE-CVD, SiCORE-DO, and SiCORE-MSB, was privileged to have Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, serve as the chairman and moderator of the Retreat Meeting 2023 at the Kamolporn Meeting Room, The Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok.

The workshop focused on the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital’s internal supporting mechanism, the Research Excellence Development Program (RED). The morning session was a World Café-style brainstorming, with participants divided into groups to discuss four key questions: Support for sustainability, HR development, Research Performance Evaluation, and Research Ecosystem. The goal was to gather insights and collaboratively address challenges and solutions identified by stakeholders.

In the afternoon session, four group discussion facilitators presented the issues identified during the morning brainstorming, summarizing proposed solutions, and exchanging ideas collaboratively. Assoc. Prof. Sith Sathornsumetee, M.D., Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, and Prof. Thananya Boonyasirinant, M.D., Head of Siriraj Excellent Innovation Center (Si-EIC), graced the session with their presence. They provided valuable insights, shared perspectives, and exchanged experiences with forefront researchers from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.

On this occasion, the Center of Research Excellence expresses deep gratitude to the Dean, Executives, and researchers within the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital for their tremendous support and active participation. On the prestigious date of October 20th, 2023, Professor Apichat Asavamongkolkul, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, presided over the 5th Research and Innovation Advisory Committee (RIAC) meeting. This meeting provided a vital platform for in-depth discussions on the research performance of SiCOREs, research management, and strategic research direction at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. Six Centers of Research Excellence, i.e., SiCORE-Allergy and Immunology, SiCORE-Cancer Precision Medicine & Systems Pharmacology, SiCORE-Dengue and Emerging Pathogens, SiCORE-Cardiovascular Disease, SiCORE-Diabetes and Obesity and SiCORE-Metabolomics and Systems Biology delivered presentation of their research plan and direction to the RIAC committees.

The insights and recommendations from the esteemed members of the RIAC promise to drive a significant transformation in our research endeavors. Following the meeting, an elegant dinner reception took place on the 12th floor of the SiMR building, fostering continued discussions in a relaxed and amiable atmosphere.

Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and Foreign Relations, Assoc. Prof. Sith Sathornsumetee, Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Assist. Prof. Dr.Woraphat Ratta–apha, Assoc. Prof. Oranee Sanmaneechai,  Assist. Prof. Tachjaree Panchalee Boonbowornpong, Deputy Manager from Siriraj Center of Research Excellence Management Unit (SiCORE–M), and Assist. On this occasion, we received an honor from Prof. Ruby Yun-Ju Huang, an invited speaker from National Taiwan University, for a lecture on “EMPreSS (Epithelial Mesenchymal Precision Spectrum Scoring) in Cancer Cell Plasticity.”

The event served as a platform for profound discussions and constructive feedback, driving the advancement of research and innovation within SiCORE-Cancer PM&SP. The other SAB Onsite Visit Program activities include a Lab and SICRES Facility tour, Research projects consultation for researchers, and Ph.D. Students. The two-day session ended with a Close discussion with Executive faculty Members. We derived various consequential comments and recommendations for leveraging research quality and impact, furthering the cause of scientific progress in Cancer research.

We received the honor from SAB members: Prof. Gregory YH Lip, from the University of Liverpool and Assoc. Prof. Jin Joo Park, from Seoul National University, to be special guest speakers. The Onsite Visit program commenced with inspiring lectures, followed by the research progress presentations and an output summary of ongoing projects from the research network. Then, the research facility tour, such as SICRES, could bring potential research collaboration in clinical trials. Another impressive session was the close discussion with the Dean and the Executives, which brought several noteworthy comments and recommendations to leverage the research quality that should be extendable for a national impact.
