Congratulations to Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, for their success from the competition “17th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz (IMSPQ)” between August 21 – 22, 2019, at Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta. The team from Siriraj has surpassed more than 100 teams from around the World and won the Bronze Medal (3rd winner) in the final round. The Gold Medal (1st winner) of the competition is National University of Singapore and the Silver Medal (2nd winner) is Anhui Medical University from China.

On August 22nd, 2019, Assist. Prof. Phawin Keskool, Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology welcomed Dr. Ghulam Rahim Awab, Deputy Dean of Nangarhar Medical Faculty Afghanistan to discuss on the collaboration on exchange program between NMFA and ENT-Siriraj.

Welcome, Prof.John M. O’Donnell from University of Pittsburgh, USA, to serve as ‘Siriraj International Visiting Scholar’ at Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University between August 19th – 23rd, 2019.

Prof. Weerasak Muangpaisan from Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital attended the Expert Group Consultation to Review Manual for Training Primary Care Physicians in Care for Older People hosted by the World Health Organization in New Delhi, India on August 20th – 21st, 2019.

On August 15th, 2019, Prof. Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, attended the press conference regarding the case of Thai patient who died with suspicious of having Ebola after returned from central Africa on August 13th, 2019. The Dean revealed that the patient has died from severe Malaria infection as confirmed by two laboratory results.

“We received a Thai male patient who just returned from central Africa on August 13th, 2019, with a fever and rectal bleeding. Later, he got a cardiac arrest, multiple organs dysfunction syndromes, and died. According to the laboratory result, we found out that the patient died of Malaria as we have been reported that the patient has been in the African jungle for three days and the symptoms had shown up five days later when he was in Thailand. However, we did not hesitate to close some area for cleaning as prevention.” Dean Prasit said.

It has been a bad flu season this year.

Siriraj Skin Laser Center, Department of Dermatology, and Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, co-hosted “The 5th iClass Anatomy Asia Cadaver Workshop” for participants from Vietnam, China, Korea, and Thailand during August 13th – 14th, 2019.

Ms. Christine McNab, a photojournalist from World Health Organization South-East Asia Regional Office (W.H.O. S.E.A.R.O.) and the team from Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand, are filming and documenting on the topics “Combating Hepatitis B through Immunization” at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, on August 13th, 2019, under the supervision of Prof. Kulkanya Chokephaibulkit, Chief of Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics and Assoc. Prof. Manopchai  Thamkhantho, Chief of Sexual Transmitted Diseases Unit, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

This year (July 2019), W.H.O. Appointed Regional Committee (Independence) just announced that Thailand had become one of the first countries in W.H.O. South-East Asia Region to achieve Hepatitis B control, with prevalence of the deadly disease dropping to less than one percent among five-year-old children.

Prof.Dr. Woraphong Manuskiatti, Director of Siriraj Skin Laser Center, was invited as a guest speaker to deliver a special lecture on the topic “Maximizing the Use of a 3-Wavelength Picosecond Laser in Asians” at “Cutera University Clinical Forum (CUCF) 2019” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
