On October 11th, 2024, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University held a hybrid meeting to discuss key updates from the AMEE 2024 conference in Basel, Switzerland. The conference, renowned for advancing medical education, sparked valuable insights for future innovations in teaching at Siriraj.

The presentations focused on the latest trends in medical education and innovation, with a strong emphasis on integrating AI into learning. The team explored how these advancements could be adapted to improve teaching methodologies at Siriraj Medical School, ensuring that the institution stays at the forefront of medical education in Thailand and globally.

On October 10th, 2024, Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, presided over the “10th ASEAN Conference on Frailty and Sarcopenia (ACFS) 2024″. The opening ceremony was attended by distinguished guests from both Thailand and abroad, including representatives from the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS); representatives from WHO–SEARO; the Director of the Institute of Geriatric Medicine, DMS, MOPH, Thailand; the Director of the Medical Service Department Bangkok Metropolitan Administration; the President of the Thai Society of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine; and international experts in geriatric medicine from various countries.

This international conference occurred for the first time in Thailand and was organized by the Siriraj Academic Center of Geriatric Medicine (SiACG), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. It attracted participants from 17 countries across Asia, Australia, and the Americas, with a total of 350 attendees. The conference was held under the theme “Make it Possible to Reverse Frailty and Sarcopenia Toward Healthy Aging”.

The scientific program featured more than 27 sessions covering advancements and knowledge exchange in geriatric care, particularly in Frailty and Sarcopenia. Highlights included discussions with WHO–SEARO representatives on “Integrated Care for Older People” and “Self-care Towards Sarcopenia Prevention”, as well as an international expert panel on the topic “Update AWGS Guidelines for Sarcopenia in 2024”.

The conference also provided an opportunity for academics and researchers interested in Frailty and Sarcopenia to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations. Over 130 submissions were received from both Thai and international participants.

Asst. Prof. Aphichat Suphathamwit, MD, from the Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, represented Siriraj at the “37th Annual Congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) LIVES 2024″, held in Barcelona, Catalonia, the Kingdom of Spain, from October 5th – 10th, 2024. He presented an E-Poster titled “Prediction Score for Urosepsis Following Surgical Procedure in Patients with Urinary Calculi”, contributing to the global discourse on advancements in intensive care.

Doctor Apinut Jaroonpipatkul, M.D., a Teaching Assistant from the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, participated in the “37th Annual Congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) LIVES 2024″ in Barcelona, Spain, from October 5th to 10th, 2024. He presented an E-Poster titled “Two-center randomized controlled trial comparing high-flow oxygen therapy versus low-level pressure support during a spontaneous breathing trial”.

Welcome, Ms. Kaitlyn Dee Kanas, a 2nd-year medical student from the University of Wroclaw, Poland, to undertake a research elective at the Siriraj Initiative in Systems Pharmacology (SISP) Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, under supervision of Asst. Prof. Somponnat Sampattavanich, Ph.D., from October 1st – December 27th, 2024.

Doctor Nichanant Sawetratanastien, M.D., a 2nd-year resident, is attending a clinical elective at the Division of Laryngology, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Boston, USA, from October 7th-23rd, 2024.

Doctor Waranthorn Tungsatitchai, M.D., a 2nd-Year Resident, is attending an OR Observation Program at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, NYU Langone Hospital – Manhattan, New York, USA, from October 3rd – 23rd, 2024.

Supisara Wongdama, MD, Third Year Resident, is attending Clinical Elective at the Department of Dermatology, Mount Sinai Hospital, USA, from October 7th to November 1st, 2024.

On October 8th, 2024, Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and Dr. Toba Kenji, CEO of Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology (TMIG), Japan along with executive members from Siriraj and TMIG presided over the “Signing Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between Siriraj and TMIG” at Sirindhorn Meeting Room, Chalermphrakiet Building, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. This memorandum of understanding encourages cooperation in healthcare and promotes innovation in the field of geriatric medicine.
