Prof. Prapat Wanitpongpan, Deputy Dean for Corporate Communication and International Relations, along the Siriraj members welcome Prof. Dr. Stefan Pfister, Director of Hopp Children’s Cancer Center Heidelberg, University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany, and distinguished guests from Hopp Children’s Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) on visit and discussion to foster research collaboration projects. Researcher Kamonlatth Rodponthukwaji, Ph.D., of the Department of Research, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and delivered a research presentation on the topic “Modulating Macrophage Polarization with Magnetic Nanoparticles containing Toll-Like Receptor Agonist: An alternative approach to enhance anticancer treatment” at the “5th International Conference On Nanomedicine And Nanobiotechnology – ICONAN 2024″ between January 15th – 17th, 2024, in Barcelona, Spain.

As a young and dynamic researcher, Dr. Rodponthukwaji seized the opportunity to connect with renowned professors and experts from prestigious universities worldwide, who are at the forefront of nanotechnology and nanomedicine research. This invaluable interaction not only expanded Dr. Rodponthukwaji’s knowledge base but also paved the way for future collaborations and partnerships between the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and leading institutions in these cutting-edge fields. On Thursday, November 30, 2023, the Center of Research Excellence and Siriraj Center of Research Excellence in Allergy and Immunology (SiCORE-Allergy) convened the “Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) Onsite Visit Meeting at Siriraj Medical Research Building (SiMR), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.”

This distinguished meeting welcomed two esteemed SAB members, namely Prof. Giorgio Walter Canonica, Senior Consultant at the Personalized Medicine Asthma & Allergy Clinic-Humanitas Research Hospital in Milano, Italy, and Prof. Ruby Pawankar, Executive Director- APAAACI, the Department of Pediatrics at Nippon Medical School, Tokyo, Japan.

Assist. Prof. Woraphat Ratta-apha, Head of Center of Research Excellence, representing the Dean and Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital,  along with Prof. Oranee Sanmaneechai, Deputy Head of Center of Research Excellence, were honored to extend a warm welcome and actively participate in the meeting.

In addition to comprehensive discussions on research findings, the event focused on exploring practical applications for the future. The presentation of research outcomes was delivered by Assoc. From November 23rd – 25th, 2023, Lecturer Tatchaporn Ongphichetmetha, M.D., from the Division of Clinical Epidemiology, Department of Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended the ’15th Congress of the Pan-Asian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (PACTRIMS)’ in Perth, Australia. Dr.Ongphichetmetha has presented her research poster presentation on the topic “Efficacy and Safety of Rituximab in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder.” Dr. Ongphichetmetha’s engaging discourse not only showcased her expertise but also advanced the dissemination of knowledge within the realm of multiple sclerosis and related disorders, marking a pivotal moment in the collective understanding of these conditions.

The PACTRIMS 2023 is an annual event that aims to provide clinical and scientific updates in the care of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica and related conditions in the Asia-Pacific region. Patients in this region face different challenges where clinical care could vary depending on different healthcare reimbursements, perceptions of disease, and accessibility to diagnostic assays and medications. PACTRIMS 2023 strives to provide opportunities for participants representing their MS communities to exchange knowledge, acquire skills, share experiences, foster collaborations and work towards our shared vision of improving the care and lives of patients with MS and other CNS inflammatory demyelinating diseases.

On Sunday, November 12, 2023, the Center of Excellence, encompassing SiCORE-M and the Center of Excellence in various diseases, including SiCORE-Allergy, SiCORE-Dengue, SiCORE-PM&SP, SiCORE-CVD, SiCORE-DO, and SiCORE-MSB, was privileged to have Prof. Apichat Asavamongkolkul, M.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, serve as the chairman and moderator of the Retreat Meeting 2023 at the Kamolporn Meeting Room, The Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok.

The workshop focused on the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital’s internal supporting mechanism, the Research Excellence Development Program (RED). The morning session was a World Café-style brainstorming, with participants divided into groups to discuss four key questions: Support for sustainability, HR development, Research Performance Evaluation, and Research Ecosystem. The goal was to gather insights and collaboratively address challenges and solutions identified by stakeholders.

In the afternoon session, four group discussion facilitators presented the issues identified during the morning brainstorming, summarizing proposed solutions, and exchanging ideas collaboratively. Assoc. Prof. Sith Sathornsumetee, M.D., Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, and Prof. Thananya Boonyasirinant, M.D., Head of Siriraj Excellent Innovation Center (Si-EIC), graced the session with their presence. They provided valuable insights, shared perspectives, and exchanged experiences with forefront researchers from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital.

During November 12th – 15th, 2023, Pharmacist Chayanis Kositamongkol, a Research Assistant from the Department of Research and Innovations and the Department of Medicine, Faulty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended the international conference ‘ISPOR Europe 2023 (International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research)’ in Copenhagen, Denmark, to present a poster on the topic “Cost-utility and budget impact analyses of cervical cancer screening using self-collected sample kit for HPV DNA testing in Thailand.” Pharmacist Kositamongkol commits to publishing her research at an international level and fostering international collaboration.

The insights and recommendations from the esteemed members of the RIAC promise to drive a significant transformation in our research endeavors. Following the meeting, an elegant dinner reception took place on the 12th floor of the SiMR building, fostering continued discussions in a relaxed and amiable atmosphere.

During October 19th – 21st, 2023, Researcher Piriya Luangwattananun, Ph.D., of the Division of Molecular Medicine and Siriraj Center of Research Excellence for Cancer Immunotherapy (SiCORE-CIT), Research Department, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended ‘The 8th Congress on Controversies in Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies (COSTEM 2023)’ in Berlin, Germany, and presented a research poster on the topic “Identification of Human Leukocyte Antigen-A*0201-Restricted Epitopes of the Folate Receptor Alpha Antigen for Activation of Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes”. The participation of Researcher Luangwattananun is poised to contribute significantly to the research development at Siriraj Hospital. The insights gained from participating in COSTEM 2023 not only provide cutting-edge information in the realm of cancer immunotherapy on a global scale but also illuminate the current perspectives of clinicians regarding this innovative approach to treating cancer.
