Siriraj Faculty Abroad at the International Complement Workshop in Australia
Brisbane, Australia – Associate Professor Panisadee Avirutnan, M.D., Ph.D., Head of the Division of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Research, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, represented Mahidol University at the prestigious “30th International Complement Workshop” in Brisbane, Australia, from September 14th – 19th, 2025.
Dr. Avirutnan presented groundbreaking research through her poster presentation titled “Epitope-Dependent Complement Activation and ADCC by Anti-NS1 Antibodies in Targeting Infected Cells: Implications for Dengue Vaccine Design.” Her work demonstrates that anti-NS1 antibody responses vary significantly based on epitope targeting—with some epitopes driving complement activation while others enhance cellular immune responses.
This research directly advances SiCORE-Dengue (Siriraj Center of Research Excellence in Dengue and Emerging Pathogens) strategic objectives by:
– Revolutionizing Vaccine Design Strategy: The findings support epitope-selective approaches to optimize protective immune responses, moving beyond the assumption that “all anti-NS1 responses are equivalent.”
– Enhancing Technical Capabilities: Strengthening Siriraj’s complement research infrastructure with standardized assays for cell-surface NS1 binding, ADCC measurements, and complement activation analysis—directly supporting higher-quality research outputs. 
– Expanding Global Research Networks: Positioning SiCORE-Dengue within the international complement research community, creating opportunities for future collaborative projects and multi-center studies.
The International Complement Workshop serves as the global forum for complement system research, bringing together leading immunologists and clinicians to advance understanding of immune mechanisms in disease and therapeutic development.

Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
