Assoc. Prof. Vuthinun Achariyapota, MD, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, participated in “The International Gynecologic Cancer Society 2024 Conference (IGCS 2024)” held in Dublin, The Republic of Ireland, from October 16th – 18th, 2024. Assoc. Prof. Achariyapota presented a research poster titled, “Impact of Obesity on Treatment and Survival Outcomes in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer: A 10-Year Retrospective Study”. This study highlights critical insights into the role of obesity in treatment efficacy and patient survival, contributing valuable knowledge to the field of gynecologic oncology.

The IGCS 2024 conference brought together experts from across the globe to discuss advancements in the treatment and management of gynecologic cancers. Topics ranged from surgical and medical oncology to pathology, radiation therapy, nursing, palliative care, and global health. The exchange of ideas at the event is expected to inspire new approaches to improving patient outcomes.

Assoc. Prof. Achariyapota’s findings and experiences from the conference are expected to contribute significantly to advancing Siriraj’s strategies in gynecologic cancer care.

Assistant Professor Peti Thuwajit, MD, Program Director of the Doctorate Program in Immunology at the Department of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, contributed as a guest speaker at the International Conference of the Genetic Society of Korea (ICGSK) 2024 in Busan, Republic of Korea, between October 10th – 14th, 2024.

Asst. Prof. Thuwajit delivered a talk titled “Diagnostic Power of DNA Methylation Markers Suggestive of Cholangiocarcinoma in ERCP-based Brush Cytology” and presented a poster titled “Cell-surface Bound DNA on Red Blood Cell Membrane as a Source for Detecting Circulating Cancer DNA.” His participation highlighted Siriraj’s cutting-edge research and facilitated international collaboration with other leading institutions.

ICGSK 2024 marked the 10th anniversary of the Genetics Society of Korea’s international academic conference. Held under the theme “Decoding Genomic Mysteries: Journey into Functional Genomics”, the event focused on exploring functional genomics beyond DNA base sequences to understand how genetic codes influence biological processes. The conference featured engaging discussions on unraveling genetic mysteries and advancing genomic science.

Mr. Natchanon Sathapanapitagkit, Pharm.D., a pharmacist from the Sterile Production Unit, Pharmacy Department at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, participated in the “Asia Pacific Oncology Pharmacy Congress (APOPC) 2024” in Tokyo, Japan, on October 12th – 13th, 2024. He presented his research through a poster titled “Oncologic Outcomes of a Modified Desensitization Protocol for Paclitaxel and Carboplatin in Gynecologic Oncology Patients”. Pharmacist Sathapanapitagkit shared Siriraj’s innovative findings with international colleagues and sought new insights to further improve cancer care at Siriraj Hospital.
 
The APOPC 2024, themed “Unite Asian Oncology Pharmacists: Start and Develop Next Generations”, focused on recent advancements, the integration of AI and digital transformation (DX) in oncology pharmacy, and fostering collaborative networks among oncology pharmacists across the Asia-Pacific region.

Ms. Utairat Meeudompong, Pharm.D., a pharmacist from the Sterile Production Unit, Pharmacy Department, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended “The 29th Congress of the Asia-Pacific Blood and Marrow Transplantation Group (APBMT)” in Singapore, held from October 10th – 13th, 2024 to present a research poster titled “Chemical stability and sterility of Plerifor® (Plerixafor) solution for injection after opening single-use vial”. This congress provided Pharmacist Meeudompong with an opportunity to exchange insights with global experts, with the aim of integrating this knowledge into clinical practice at Siriraj Hospital.

The 29th Annual Congress of the APBMT Group, themed “Harnessing the Immune System”, is a scientific meeting enabling all professionals interested in blood and marrow transplantation and other blood cell therapies within the region to present their research findings and share information and attend the state-of-the-art educational symposia. Networking to plan or review collaborative studies, APBMT working group activities, and meeting with industry representatives to discuss their initiatives are other important activities during this meeting.

 

Ms. Tantip Arigul, a bioinformatician from the Division of Medical Bioinformatics, Department of Research, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, conducted an intensive training workshop titled “Nanopore Workshop: Bioinformatics of Nanopore Technology (EPI2ME CLOUD)” at the University of Parma, Italy.

The workshop focused on the EPI2ME platform, a cloud-based service for analyzing nanopore sequencing data. It provided an in-depth overview of the platform’s functionalities, including the EPI2ME client and MinKNOW software, which convert electrical signals from DNA/RNA reads into basecalled sequences. Participants were introduced to the MinION device, a compact tool for real-time genomic data processing, alongside the EPI2ME portal and agent, which are essential for managing user profiles, generating analysis reports, and securely executing data analyses.

Key workflows such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) detection were demonstrated, emphasizing quality control measures, including read length and quality score filtering. This comprehensive training offered valuable insights for researchers leveraging nanopore sequencing in their studies.

In parallel with the workshop, Lecturer Thidathip Wongsurawat, PhD, and the Siriraj team strengthened academic ties with the University of Parma by presenting the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. This agreement formally establishes Siriraj as a Nanopore Center of Excellence, underscoring its leading role in advancing research and fostering international partnerships.

The expertise shared and insights gained during this engagement are expected to enhance Siriraj Hospital’s capacity for cutting-edge genomic research, further solidifying its global reputation as a leader in nanopore sequencing technology.

Doctor Pimchanok Kulsirichawaroj, M.D., a Clinical Educator from the Division of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, participated in the “2024 World Muscle Society Annual Congress” in Prague, Czechia, from October 7th to 12th, 2024. She presented a poster titled “Utilizing Next-Generation Sequencing for Pediatric-onset Neuromuscular Patients Unidentified by Traditional Diagnostic Techniques”.

On October 11th, 2024, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University held a hybrid meeting to discuss key updates from the AMEE 2024 conference in Basel, Switzerland. The conference, renowned for advancing medical education, sparked valuable insights for future innovations in teaching at Siriraj.

The presentations focused on the latest trends in medical education and innovation, with a strong emphasis on integrating AI into learning. The team explored how these advancements could be adapted to improve teaching methodologies at Siriraj Medical School, ensuring that the institution stays at the forefront of medical education in Thailand and globally.

Asst. Prof. Aphichat Suphathamwit, MD, from the Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, represented Siriraj at the “37th Annual Congress of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) LIVES 2024″, held in Barcelona, Catalonia, the Kingdom of Spain, from October 5th – 10th, 2024. He presented an E-Poster titled “Prediction Score for Urosepsis Following Surgical Procedure in Patients with Urinary Calculi”, contributing to the global discourse on advancements in intensive care.

He presented an E-Poster titled “Two-center randomized controlled trial comparing high-flow oxygen therapy versus low-level pressure support during a spontaneous breathing trial”.

From October 2nd – 5th, 2024, Asst. Prof. Rathachai Kaewlai, M.D., from the Division of Diagnostic Radiology, Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended “The 80th Korean Congress of Radiology (KCR 2024) – Everlasting Evolution for Patient-centered Care” in Seoul, Korea, to present a poster presentation on the topic “Utility of CT-derived optic nerve sheath diameter in surgical decision making for non-concussive traumatic brain injury patients who did not undergo immediate surgery: a propensity score-matching study”.
