During September 7th – 15th, 2021, Assoc. Prof. Narumon Densupsoontorn, Chief of Division of Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended the virtual congress “ESPEN 2021 Virtual Congress” and delivered a presentation on the topic “Comparisons between The Clinical Outcomes of Early and Late Enteral Nutrition and Mortality risk factors for Pediatric Burns“.

The ESPEN 2021 Virtual Congress was held to promote nutritional care through a virtual congress committed to disseminating the best science, education, and innovative concepts in nutritional care. It’s also aimed at creating new opportunities for interaction, further innovations, and initiatives to enhance these exchanges, as well as effective presentation of original findings and new topics through a renewed and updated programme, and committed to building an enhanced technical platform and tools to ensure fruitful and smooth participation for all.

Prof. Piyaporn Apisarnthanarak of Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and delivered an oral presentation on the research topic “Mucinous Colorectal Adenocarcinoma: Is CT Good Enough for Preoperative Prediction?” at the 19th Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology (AOCR). This meeting was held as a virtual platform in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, between July 1st – 4th, 2021.

AOCR is a congress for the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology. The aim is to promote scientific collaborations, professional rapport, exchanges of knowledge and friendship amongst the Asian Oceanian region. The theme for the meeting is ‘From Pixel to Clarity’.

Lecturer Dr. Yodying Kaolawanich of Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, has completed his role as a “Visiting Scholar at Duke Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Center”, Duke University Medical Center, USA, between April 1st, 2019 – March 31st, 2021.

During his services at Duke Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Center, Lecturer Dr. Yodying has co-conducted a research project (still ongoing) “Native T1 Mapping in the Diagnosis of Myocardial Replacement Fibrosis with Versus without Fatty Metaplasia in Patients with Chronic Myocardial Infarction”.

After completing, he will continue his role at the Division of Cardiology and conduct a cardiovascular MRI research project.

Lecturer Dr. Thanya Techapichetvanich from Dermatosurgery Division, Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has successfully completed the “Clinical Fellowship Training in Mohs Micrographic Surgery & Reconstruction, Scar Surgery” and “Clinical Fellowship Training in Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Fat Grafting” from Department of Dermatology at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea, between July 1st, 2019 – March 31st, 2021.

After her graduation, Lecturer Dr. Thanya will continue her position at the Dermatosurgery Division and will responsible for Cutaneous Cancer Surgery & Reconstruction and Scar Clinic.

Asst. Prof. Tachjaree Panchalee from Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has completed her “Postdoctoral Fellow in Cell-based Prenatal Testing Study” at Department of Molecular and Human Genetics, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Houston, USA, between June 2019 – May 2020, and complete her role as a Visiting Scholar (Research Fellow) of Clinical Research in Prenatal Therapy for Fetuses with Alpha Thalassemia Major at Center for Maternal-Fetal Precision Medicine, University of California San Francisco (UCSF), USA, between June 2020 – March 2021.

During her studies, Asst. Prof. Tachjaree has an opportunity to deliver both oral and poster presentations on many topics such as “The effect of maternal body mass index and gestational age on circulating trophoblast yield in cell-based noninvasive prenatal testing”, “Single circulating trophoblast in maternal circulation testing for prenatal diagnosis in multiple pregnancies”, “Meta-analysis of aggregated registry data of ATM patients”, and “Pregnancy outcomes among women affected by thalassemia traits”.

After her graduation, Asst. Prof. Tachjaree will continue her position at the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine to conducting the research of Cell-based NIPT and Alpha Thalassemia and Implementing the Intrauterine Treatment of Alpha Thalassemia!

Lecturer Dr. Maytinee Srifuengfung of Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, attended and delivered a research oral presentation on the topic “Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Older Adults Living in Long-term Care Centers in Thailand, and Risk Factors for Post-traumatic Stress, Depression, and Anxiety” at the 19th International Congress of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists (PRCP 2021). This congress was held as a hybrid platform, both online and onsite, at the Swiss Grand Hotel Seoul, Republic of Korea, between April 8th – 10th, 2021.

Congratulations! Asst.Prof. Achiraya Teyateeti of Division of Radiation Oncology, Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has completed her role as a ‘Visiting Scholar/Research Fellow’ at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, between February 11th, 2019 – February 6th, 2021.

After her completion, Asst.Prof. Achiraya is determined to improve the stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic body radiotherapy service and conduct research in central nervous system tumor and prostate cancer!

Congratulations! Lecturer Dr. Kusuma Chaiyasoot of Division of Clinical Nutrition, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has completed her Doctoral Progam (Ph.D.) in Obesity Studies at the Centre for Obesity Research, University College London (UCL), UK, during May 1st, 2016 – December 31st, 2020.

During her studies, Lecturer Dr. Kusuma has an opportunity to deliver a poster presentation on the topic “Identifying factors associated with weight-loss and metabolic success after bariatric surgery”. After her graduation, Lecturer Dr. Kusuma will continue her position at the Division of Clinical Nutrition to provide good care for the patients with obesity, and to train the medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals to deliver good care to people with obesity, and lastly, to research in obesity field!

“Obesity is a condition in which excess adipose tissue (body fat) has accumulated in the body, leading to adverse health effects. Obesity increases the risk of developing several diseases; for example, type 2 diabetes (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), certain types of cancer, and psychological problems, leading to impaired quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. Thailand is currently ranked second in ASEAN for the most obese countries. The prevalence of obesity in Thai adults was 37.5% in 2014, resulting in a significant economic burden. Nonetheless, obesity specialists in Thailand are currently scarce.

To provide good care for people with obesity, a well-established multidisciplinary team including obesity nurse specialists, obesity physicians, surgeons, endoscopists, dieticians, psychologists, etc., is necessary. People with obesity thus can be well-informed and supported by various modalities: lifestyle modification, medical and surgical weight-loss interventions, as well as the treatment for obesity co-morbidities. More importantly, identifying people at risk for obesity using clinical, genetic and/or physiological predictors can be useful for early detection and treatment. In addition, training medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals to deliver good care to people with obesity to handle the obesity pandemic is a priority. Furthermore, there is substantial room for research in obesity field. Study in gut hormones, genetics, metabolomics, gut microbiota, etc., could lead to better understanding in the pathophysiology of obesity and potentially discover a new treatment to tackle the obesity pandemic!”

On December 7th, 2020, Lecturer Dr. Weerawon Thangboonjit from Department of Pharmacology attended a virtual graduation ceremony held by Imperial College London, due to COVID-19, to celebrate her graduation of 2020. Dr. Weerawon started studying at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London, since November 2013, and earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Medicine Research in August 2019 with a thesis topic “The Possible Links between COPD and Lung Cancer: Cellular and Mitochondrial Function in Airway Epithelial Cells”.

After she came back to the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, she works as a lecturer/an instructor for postgraduate programs of her department. Besides a teaching role, as her willingness to be a part of the success of the organization, she believes that her research experiences abroad can create a new research field of mitochondrial dysfunction and disease mechanisms discovery especially diseases occurring in our aging society. Her hope is gaining more knowledge understanding will be able to improve the quality of life in clinical care in the future perspective.

Congratulations to Asst. Prof. Kitikan Thana-udom of Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, who has completed her role as a ‘Visiting Assistant Research Scientist (Research Fellow) in Psychiatry’ at the ULCA Semel Institute for Neurosciences and Human Behavior, and at the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) between October 1st, 2018 – June 11th, 2020.

During her services, Asst. Prof. Kitikan has assisted in many research topics such as memory impairment, memory training, and late-life mood disorder. Asst. Prof. Kitikan also participated in the CSR activities with the Royal Thai Consulate by giving a lecture to senior housing on the topic “Mental Health in Elders” and delivered a poster presentation at the “American Psychiatric Association Meeting 2019” in San Francisco. Asst. Prof. Kitikan also attended the Short Training Course in “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia”. She recently published her research topics, “Sleep Quality, Neurocognitive Performance, and Memory Self-Appraisal in Middle-Aged and Older Adults with Memory Complaints” and “A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial of Combined Escitalopram and Memantine for Older Adults With Major Depression and Subjective Memory Complaints”. And lastly, Asst. Prof. Kitikan has delivered an abstract presentation on the topic “Anxiety Symptoms are Associated with Smaller Insular and Orbitofrontal Cortex Volumes in Late-Life Depression”.
